As the 14th round of negotiations begin in Brussels for the EU-US international trade agreement (TTIP), a leaked document obtained by Friends of the Earth Europe, confirms fears that TTIP is a threat to Europe's democracy and environmental safeguards.

The European Commission today proposed the provisional application of the free trade deal between the EU and Canada (the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement – CETA). That means the agreement would be applied before national parliaments have a chance to vote on it. [1]

Analysis of newly leaked documents on the EU-US trade negotiations (TTIP) has confirmed that the EU’s democracy, as well as safeguards for protecting people and the environment, are under a substantial and unprecedented corporate attack, according to Friends of the Earth Europe.  

The group has raised concerns about the EU’s food safety system, stating that there are too many warning signals to support claims by the European Commission that EU safety standards will remain if TTIP is agreed.

Germany's largest association of judges and public prosecutors yesterday publicly criticised the European Commission's Investment Court System, a set of reforms to replace the Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism in the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

The judges are questioning the legal basis of such system, as well as the need for it to be introduced in the first place.
