The proposal to share post-2012 greenhouse gas reductions between EU countries, known as 'Effort Sharing', is one of the key elements of EU action against climate change. It sets the reduction targets for sectors not covered by emissions trading, such as agriculture, transport and households representing 55 per cent of EU emissions. However this proposal, steered by the self-interest of EU member states, sets the bar far too low:

A short film made by Friends of the Earth in Belgium, with the help of award winning film director Nic Balthazar, is helping spread the message that politicians must 'Act Now' against climate change.

More than 6,000 people took part in the recording of the Big Ask video clip at Ostend on the Belgian coast. It was the largest ever event against climate change in Belgium.

Brussels/London, 29 October 2008 - The UK Parliament voted yesterday evening for the world's first Climate Change Law upping the pressure on other European governments to legally commit to cut emissions and on the European Union to agree a strong climate and energy package.
The UK Climate Change Law has been hailed as a major victory for people power following a three and a half year Big Ask campaign by Friends of the Earth. Since the campaign was launched more than 200,000 people in the UK have emailed, written to or visited their MP to ask them to support a strong law.

Brussels, 20 October 2008 - Environmental NGOs have today accused the EU Environment Ministers of supporting old-fashioned, inefficient and wasteful industries at the expense of those that innovate and create new jobs. During the discussion on the EU climate and energy package, ministers are also watering down the emission reduction proposal for non-industrial sectors, undermining the best chance to help European households suffering from high energy bills.

Brussels, 17 October 2008 - European Commission plans announced today to protect the world's forests have been slammed by Friends of the Earth Europe as "toothless" and unlikely to have any major impact on reducing deforestation. The "forest package" adopted today by the European Commission fails to include both measures to reduce deforestation and legislation to prevent the trade of illegal timber.

Brussels, 16 October 2008 - European leaders have today pledged to press ahead with their planned response to climate change, despite attempts by some EU member states to scupper the measures in order to protect polluting industry, say Climate Action Network Europe, Friends of the Earth Europe, Greenpeace and WWF.
