Brussels, 2 June 2008 - Using crops to make biofuels is contributing to the global food crisis and will lead to millions of people going hungry, warn international development and environment groups today. The statement is made in a letter to the European Commission and EU Heads of State urging them to abandon the proposed 10 per cent target for the use of biofuels in transport and to dismantle associated support measures. [1] The call comes a day before a major United Nations conference on food security in Rome.

Brussels / Prague, 22 May 2008 - Friends of the Earth Europe and Greenpeace, the only environmental organisations represented in the European Nuclear Energy Forum, have sent a letter [1] to European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs to express their concern about the industry biased Forum. The two organisations have asked the Commissioner to call for the withdrawal of the working group reports on 'Risks' and 'Opportunities', which they deem unsatisfactory, and to counteract the Forum's industry bias by insisting on balanced civil society participation.

Brussels, 4 April 2008 - Leaked EU documents reveal that preliminary negotiations to establish sustainability criteria for biofuels could fail to prevent an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and fail to stop negative impacts on wildlife and people, international environment groups warned today. The documents reveal that EU Member States are currently planning to apply only cosmetic changes to the very weak criteria put forward by the European Commission in January. [1]

Brussels, February 27 - A Europe-wide climate campaign launched today by Friends of the Earth Europe and the Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke aims to get governments and the European Union to commit to annual cuts in emissions to fight climate change.

The Big Ask brings together Friends of the Earth groups from 17 European countries [1] each of which is asking its government to introduce legally binding annual emission cuts. Together they are asking the European Union to force all member states to cut their emissions year-on-year.

Brussels, 25 February - A new map with details of 50 environmentally damaging and economically dubious infrastructure projects in Central and Eastern Europe was launched by CEE Bankwatch Network and Friends of the Earth Europe in Brussels today [1]. Based on the most extensive investigation to date, the map entitled 'Cohesion or Collision?' shows controversial projects with a total cost of EUR 22 billion. The projects are either already financed, or planned to be financed, by EU structural and cohesion funds and/or the European Investment Bank (EIB) [2].
