The second shipment of controversial fracked gas arrived in Spain from the US today, for sale on a continent that has widely rejected the environmentally destructive fossil fuel. The shipment arrived at the Mugardos liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, at the port of Ferrol in Galicia, following an earlier delivery to Portugal this year.

Efforts to tackle climate change across the European Union fall far short of commitments made in Paris, according to Friends of the Earth Europe. The European Commission announced today its plan to distribute the goal of cutting emissions 40% by 2030 among the 28 member states.

Shell and the Nigerian government must finally address the devastating oil pollution in the Niger Delta, according to Friends of the Earth Nigeria today. A broad coalition of civil society organisations cautiously welcomed an announcement from the government today that it would launch a programme to act on recommendations from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) to clean up pollution in the Ogoniland region linked to the oil industry.

On the second weekend of May, thousands of people from across Europe gathered in a small corner of Lusatia, close to the German border with Poland. They were there for a weekend of anti-coal stunts and actions including a climate camp and demonstrations, next to one of the most polluting coal mines in Europe. In parallel, many participated a direct action under the banner of Ende Gelände (here and no further) with the aim of shutting down the mine – and they succeeded.

The Norwegian government is directly contravening the Paris climate agreement, and threatening pristine natural environments, according to Friends of the Earth Norway, after handing out new oil and gas licenses in the Arctic areas of the Barents Sea today.

Friends of the Earth Germany, alongside allies and German brewers, called for a ban on fracking outside of the German parliament today. The alliance of brewers were protesting against the threat of fracking to water quality, and ultimately German beer, and have launched special bottle-caps for beer bottles with the slogan "Nein! Zu Fracking".

Europe continues to be taken hostage by destructive fossil fuels and the companies who profit from them, according to Friends of the Earth groups protesting at an informal meeting of European energy ministers in Amsterdam today.

Friends of the Earth France, along with a number of allies, ended a three-day blockade yesterday of an international summit on offshore oil and gas drilling, in Pau, France, with a mass 'die-in'.

Over 500 activists peacefully demonstrated against the negative impacts of offshore exploration and exploitation, under discussion at the MCE Deepwater Development summit by representatives from big oil and gas companies including Total, Shell, BP, Exxon, and Repsol.
