We still live in a linear wasteful economy – the EU need to accelerate a systemic transition to a true circular economy, to drastically reduce the EU's absolute natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions. With the Prevent Waste coalition of European civil society organisations, we advocate for the improvement and enforcement of EU policies on waste prevention and product design.

The ‘Manifesto for a Sustainable Europe for its Citizens’ sets out a future of Europe based on core ethical values and sustainable development: democracy and transparency, social and environmental justice, human rights, the rule of law, equality, and solidarity. It states that European policies, rules and standards should that do what they were intended for: protect and safeguard well-being and health, ensure safety and freedom for people and protection of the climate and the environment, and serve present and future generations in and outside Europe.

Taxing plastics can help lead to a responsible use of the material by triggering the necessary reduction of both production and consumption, a new report finds. However, a plastic tax will only work if designed to influence producer and consumer behaviour, rather than raising revenue.

Friends of the Earth Europe, together with an alliance of European-wide civil society organisations, has sent an open letter to Environment Ministers from all EU Member States urging them to support more ambitious measures ahead of final negotiations on amendments to EU waste legislation. We call for binding reduction targets for marine litter and food waste, and higher recycling targets.

Rethink Plastic - a new European alliance to cut plastic use, of which Friends of the Earth Europe is a member - has sent an open letter to the European Commission calling on them to propose strong and harmonised EU legislation within the EU Strategy on Plastics – due to be published at the end of 2017. Copies of this letter have been sent to Vice-Presidents Timmermans and Katainen, and Environment Commissioner Vella.
