As community renewables grow in western Europe, what about central and eastern regions?

A socially fair energy transformation means putting renewable energy into the hands of communities and people. The transition to 100% renewable energy, must benefit people too – not just big corporations - we must take power back from Big Energy. Big energy companies have consistently acted in their own financial interest, instead of the planet and sharing the wealth from renewable energy with communities.

The world’s biggest public bank, the European Investment Bank (EIB), has proposed to ditch funding fossil fuel projects.

The EIB published on Friday 26 July its draft energy lending policy, which proposes a major switch in its lending policy, in reaction to climate crisis. If this policy draft is accepted by EU finance ministers in September, this would be a significant step forward in the campaign for a fossil free Europe.

Solarna Pecka will be first citizen solar energy initiative in rural Bosnia-Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is about to gain its first ever community solar electricity, after 226 individuals and organisations chipped in to one of the country’s first ever crowdfunding campaigns. In just 26 days, around six thousand euros were raised for ‘Solarna Pecka’, to bring solar energy to a remote and depopulated rural area, Pecka village.

Today’s European Commission analysis of Member States’ draft ten-year plans for climate and energy confirms a big climate fail, according to Friends of the Earth Europe. The EU's 2030 renewables and energy efficiency targets — already insufficient — will be missed if Member States do not improve their plans.

On the April 5th 2019, the sun started to shine again in Spain - though the weather forecast predicted rain. The Spanish Government passed new regulations on self-consumption of renewable energy, that could unleash a renewables bloom.

The regulations, contained in a Royal Decree, bring to an end a four-year hiatus during which the country of the sun installed zero new renewable capacity.

Turning rights into reality

The community energy movement has recently received an important boost. New EU legislation on renewable energy gives communities and individuals the right to generate, store, consume and sell their own energy.

These community energy rights could be transformational for the fossil-free energy system we need to build. But these rights must now be laid down in national laws, to take effect.
