Regrettably civil society rights are under threat globally, including in Europe.

We still live in a linear wasteful economy – the EU need to accelerate a systemic transition to a true circular economy, to drastically reduce the EU's absolute natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions. With the Prevent Waste coalition of European civil society organisations, we advocate for the improvement and enforcement of EU policies on waste prevention and product design.

With money and meetings, subsidies and sponsorships, the oil and gas lobby is fuelling the climate disaster.

Since 2010, just five oil and gas corporations and their fossil fuel lobby groups have spent at least a quarter of a billion euros buying influence at the heart of European decision-making.

This briefing exposes not just the hundreds of millions these oil and gas majors have spent on lobbying the EU, but the wide variety of underhand tactics they’ve used to successfully water down effective climate legislation.

A civil society statement, supported by nearly 200 organisations worldwide declaring: "We are facing a climate emergency, created by the fossil fuel industry. We demand fossil free politics."

Similar to existing restrictions on tobacco industry lobbyists, we need a firewall that protects our democratic institutions and our decision-making from fossil fuel industry interference: no more private lobby meetings, partnerships, or collaboration.

You and your community oppose the plans, the courts judge in your favour and the project is stopped. Seems like a community victory, right? But then the company behind the project sues your country for interfering with its profits, demanding millions or even billions in compensation.

In an open letter, over 340 civil society organisations are demanding that the European Union immediately halt free trade agreement negotiations with the Mercosur bloc (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) on the grounds of deteriorating human rights and environmental conditions in Brazil. The letter is addressed to presidents of the EU institutions ahead of the ministerial-level meeting next week in Brussels where EU and Mercosur foreign ministers aim to finalise the negotiations.
